What Every Mom Really Wants for her Baby Shower
A baby shower is such a beautiful and fun event when we get to spoil a new mother-to- be with all the things that she will need to care for her new bundle of joy. Most of the time we get so caught up in the cute outfits and the basic nursery essentials that we think only about baby and totally forget about mom. If you are a veteran mom, you know what I mean. If you aren't, allow me to paint a picture. Those first four weeks home with a new baby are very exhausting, challenging, and just plain overwhelming sometimes. I think that we could also use baby shower gifts to help new moms through that transition to make it as enjoyable for them as possible. Yup, I've made a nice list of gifts that we could get moms-to-be for their baby showers that will make their postpartum lives a bit easier. These are not gifts that
they are registering for but certainly gifts that they will appreciate more than you know.
1. Postpartum Doula Help. Let’s face it, housework never ends and stacks up every day that we
neglect it. The last thing a new mom wants to do when she is recovering from child birth and
learning how to be a mother is to do dishes and laundry and all the other stuff that is necessary in a functioning home. Why don’t we give new moms help during that time? A postpartum doula will do all that and so much more.
2. Lactation Support. Your lovely pregnant lady may not be thinking about breastfeeding support yet. However, breastfeeding can sometimes be a major source of stress and frustration the first few days postpartum. It can be overwhelming for new parents to research a lactation counselor in the area, call during office hours, make an immediate appointment, and figure out how they are going to pay for it all in the first day home with baby. It would be extremely helpful to get them a gift certificate for a local lactation professional to have at the ready for when baby arrives. Mom and Dad may already have someone in mind so you could even start with asking them. This lactation professional may also teach classes which is always recommended for getting the best start.
3. Massage. Pregnancy and Childbirth are really hard work. By the time she is home, her body is aching and exhausted. She deserves some spoiling with a lovely massage designed for her
4. Postpartum Food Options. The last thing new parents want to do for the first few weeks home is think about cooking. They are so tired and overworked. Another great gift idea is to either cook them lots of freezer meals or get them gift cards for places that they love so that they have options for take out. Trust me, they will love you forever!!
Don't misunderstand me. As a recent new mom, I loved everything I got for my baby shower and I felt super prepared with lots of clothes, diapers, and everything baby could ever need or want. No one warned me about what postpartum life would be like. Now that I'm on the other side, I realize that there are only so many funny onesies or bath time toys that a couple will use, but gifts that will help them through the "welcome home baby" transition will be invaluable to them.
